Dr Tan Chong Hiok is a cardiologist who is duo accredited in Interventional cardiology and echocardiology in Singapore. He completed his cardiology training in 1999 after which he went over to Sydney, Australia to hone his skills in echocardiology. During the 1 year stay, he also published several papers in this sub-specialty.
He is an accredited echocardiologist certified to perform 2D echo, treadmill stress echo, Dobutamine stress echo and trans-oesophageal echocardiography. All the echo scans done in the clinic are personally vetted or performed by Dr Tan. After his sabbatical in Sydney, he returned to Singapore and worked in Changi General Hospital. During this time he also took up training in interventional cardiology, and he spent a year in Asan Hospital, one of the world’s leaders in stenting the left main artery.
Upon returning to Singapore, Dr Tan spearheaded intervention via the radial approach in Changi General Hospital. He has given many presentations in international meetings. He also has extensive experience in performing stenting of the left main artery and chronic total occlusion (arteries which have been completely blocked for a long time). He is one of very few cardiologists in Singapore who have opened up totally blocked arteries using the retrograde approach. He also has a great wealth of experience in doing complex cases in patients who were declined or are unsuitable for bypass surgery.
Dr Tan has won the prestigious prize of ‘Best Case’ award at the 15th CTO club (Nagoya 2014). In 2016, he also won both Best Case presentation in CCT (Kobe) as well as Best Case presentation in CTO Live (Singapore). Being the only Singaporean who has won 3 major prizes in global Chronic Total Occlusion conferences. Dr. Tan has done the most number of retrograde-approach for opening up totally blocked arteries in Singapore. His success spares patients from the trauma of undergoing bypass operation.
Being duo-accredited, Dr Tan’s patients are assured of a well-balanced opinion. Maintaining a link with the academic centres also ensures that he remains on the cutting edge of technologies. Dr Tan is still actively involved in research and teaching. He returns to the public institutions regularly to supervise, teach and perform both echo and interventional cases. He is also an invited faculty member for various international conferences.
Prior to setting up his private practice, Dr Tan was the director and senior consultant of the Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory at Changi General Hospital, as well as a visiting senior consultant at National Heart Centre and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
