Common Spinal Conditions
Herniated Disc: Also known as a slipped disc or ruptured disc, this occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc protrudes through the tough outer layer, leading to pain and potential nerve compression.
Sciatica: Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and down each leg. It’s often caused by compression or irritation of the nerve roots in the lumbar spine.
Spinal Stenosis: This condition involves the narrowing of the spinal canal, leading to pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. It can result in back pain and various neurological symptoms.
Spondylolisthesis occurs when one vertebra slips forward over an adjacent vertebra, potentially leading to nerve compression and instability.
Spinal Fractures: Fractures in the vertebrae can result from traumatic injuries or conditions like osteoporosis, causing pain, deformity, and potential nerve damage.
Spinal Tumors: Tumors that originate in or spread to the spine can cause pain, neurological symptoms, and potential complications if left untreated.
Cervical Radiculopathy: This condition occurs when a nerve root in the neck is irritated or compressed, leading to pain, weakness, and numbness radiating into the arm and hand.
Lumbar Radiculopathy (Sciatica): Similar to cervical radiculopathy, this condition involves irritation or compression of a nerve root in the lower back, causing pain and other symptoms down the leg.
Degenerative Disc Disease: This is a condition where the spinal discs degenerate over time, leading to pain and potential nerve compression as the discs lose their cushioning ability.
Scoliosis: Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, which can occur during growth spurts before puberty or due to degenerative changes in adulthood.
Kyphosis: Kyphosis is an excessive forward rounding of the upper back, leading to a hunchback appearance. It can result from various causes, including poor posture and certain medical conditions.
Ankylosing Spondylitis: This is a form of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine, leading to pain, stiffness, and potentially fusion of the vertebrae.
